Any true business revolves around having the right people. Many times, you will then encounter the next challenge. Where do you put them and how do you align them to win.
As one of the co-owners would put it, scheduling is like your battle plan. With it in place, it can create such synergy and positive momentum for the team. A lot of times, many generals (managers) simply schedule with the intent of “filling in” the amount of staff but considers very little based on performance.
Take Cactus Club as an example, they schedule their best people on the best days and of course they achieve the level of result unparellel to any other in the Vancouver Restaurant scene. Positioning your people takes the most amount of time.
What can be the solution? From our management level, we try to create the best innovation from its kind, we are working on automation scheduling for the current 3 but forthcoming restaurants.
“Computers or software certainly cant replace the human component but it simply makes the human that much faster.” -me
At Posh, we want to schedule people to achieve the greatest level of result, we want our team to win and feel good doing it. Thus, usually simply to position the team in alignment with the company goals, it often times creates challenges and conflicts. Of course the classic, you have good senior staff that are now slowing down in growth, becoming complacent and feeling a little “bored” and looking for change.
Is there really a solution to this global problem. People want to work less and earn more. People want to try new things even after the 30th new thing.
20 years ago, Hong Kong was focused on “jump from job to job” while today they are focused on “i will do a good job”. These are campaigns created by the HK government. The way I see it; people have got to get somewhat a reality check too, first do a good job and the opportunities will be knocking on your door.
As restauranteurs, scheduling is without a doubt your fundamental game plan. Dont neglect it.
